1697 Undergraduate Otolaryngology: Enhancing Interest and Education with Hands-on Simulation

Abstract Introduction With cancelled student placements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a shift towards non-patient-facing methods deliver medical education. The aim was design, and evaluate an ENT course for undergraduate students. Method A three-part simulation on common emergency conditions delivered by trainees students (n = 50). It involved theoretical hands-on experience with otoscopy head models; nasoendoscopy epistaxis management upper airway models nasal packing kits; of compromised airways using critical models, adjuncts, intubation cricothyroidotomy kits. Delegates were given pre- post-course questionnaires, another at six-weeks test knowledge retention. Results statistically analysed paired independent sample t-tests. significant improvement in post-test 55% (p<0.01) observed. also demonstrated sustained 51% later compared baseline knowledge. 76% 80% reported improved confidence managing performing respectively; 46% increased interest pursuing as potential career.
